Customer Reviews For

Excellent companion to PS3

Review Date: April 6, 2010
Reviewer: J. C. Winter, California
Just wanted to share a few points about this product that weren't clear to me before I purchased it.

1.) The receiver does not decode Dolby True HD or Master DTS HD. HOWEVER, the receiver accepts LPCM signals. So, if your Blu-Ray player can send an LPCM signal and it has onboard decoders for those codes (and I believe they all do), then you can still experience everything Dolby True HD and Master DTS HD has to offer. If you're lost at this point, I'll put it this way. If you have a PS3 and this sound system, you're getting the full "HD" sound offered by Blu-Ray discs. Just make sure your PS3 is set to send Blu-Ray audio via LPCM, not Bitsreaming. Also, you need to connect your PS3 with HDMI to make this happen.

2.) The sound from this system is excellent. 1000 watts is plenty of power for your typical home theater. In fact, it's more watts than most home theater systems on the market currently offer. In my experience, a good rule of thumb is "more watts the better". This is true even you don't plan on cranking up the volume.

3.) The rear speakers on this system are not automatically wireless. That is, this system is CAPABLE of wirelessly transmitting to the rear speakers, but in order to do this, you need to purchase a transmitter to plug into the back of the receiver and an amplifier for the rear speakers. Sony calls this system AIR. So, in case it isn't clear, this system is only "wireless ready". I haven't purchased the transmitter and the amp needed, but installation looks like it would be very simple. It's nice to have that option in the future.

The only downside to this system, as I see it, is that the remote is overly complicated. Lots of buttons and I only seem to use about 8 of them. If my home theater had more Sony BRAVIA compenents, then maybe all of the extra buttons would be of more use. Overall, however, the bad remote is definitely not a dealbraker. The positives of this system greatly outweigh this one minor negative.
Amazing Value!!!

I can't accurately express how great this product is in a few paragraphs, but I'll try. I'll start by saying that I already had a Blu-ray player (PS3), so I was looking for a surround system that was affordable and easy to set-up, actually sounded good, and felt like a quality product. After using the system for a few days I can tell you that it has more than accomplished these things.

I paid full retail price, which was $350, but again, I only needed a surround system by itself, no DVD or Blu-ray player, which is what the majority of systems seem to be these days with BD becoming more popular. That said I was willing to pay a little more if it was a good system. The system comes with a central speaker, two front speakers and two surround speakers to achieve 5.1 surround, which is plenty for an apartment like mine. There is also a very powerful subwoofer included as well, so when I have a home I can really pump the bass. Additionally, the power is 1000w.

Knowing a bit, but not a whole lot about surround sound setup, this system made it ridiculously easy for me to set it up and get going. Each speaker is color-coded for easy installation, which seems like a no-brainer but this is not always the case. So anyway, you plug the wires into each speaker and then into the receiver and plug in the subwoofer and you're done with the wiring, it's really that simple. The wires are plenty long for the two surround speakers as well, so that's not an issue. There is also an auto-calibration microphone that comes with the system that you place where you wit to watch TV and it does its thing in less than 30 seconds and you're system is calibrated positionally just like that.

I've watched a few Blu-rays so far and the sound really is great, top-notch really. If you've never had a surround system before, you don't know what you're missing! I could never watch a movie again without it. Its a very powerful system as well, I'm waiting for my neighbors to say something soon lol (which is why there is night mode included) There are many modes you can use as well, such as Dolby Pro Logic with 5.1 support, sports, games, music etc... Sports gives you a reverberating sound as if you were at the stadium listening to the announcer, pretty cool minor stuff.

Now, there are also 3 HDMI inputs included, which is partly why this system is a little pricier than others, but it is well worth it. So I have my PS3 and DVR hooked into the receiver with one to spare. It's nice to just switch the receiver to which one I want rather than the tv, I basically don't need my tv remote anymore. I know there is no ipod dock included, but you can buy an $8 cable (red and white tips) and play it through that, so it's not really worth the $100+ Sony DMP dealy.

So there you have it, a great system for the price from Sony, who comes through in the clutch once again. Ignore the reviews that say they thought this had a Blu-ray player with it, I am not reviewing Amazon, rather I am reviewing this product.

Pros: 3 HDMI inputs, great sound, sleek and compact, easy set-up, auto-calibration.
Cons: a tad pricy but the quality is there

If you don't need a blu-ray player and you don't want to deal with annoyingly complicated set-up, this is the system you want.
Excellent Home Theater System

Reviewer: Dan,
This Home Theater system is amazing. The set up is very quick and easy. Out of the box it sounds amazing there is no need to tweek it. This unit does not contain a bluray or DVD player. It is a component home theater system. That means that it is a receiver for HD equipment you already have like a HD cable/satellite box, bluray player, PS3, XBOX360. It has 3 HDMI ports to connect your equipment and one more that goes to the TV. After everything is plugged in correctly you got to make sure your equipment is set to the proper surround sound settings. in the case of a bluray and PS3. set the audio output to Linear PCM(LPCM)though the HDMI cable, and your cable box to its proper surround sound setting(dolby digital most likely). Now your ready to experience full HD picture and sound. It is 1000W of sound and its sounds crystal clear. I tested it with Avatar and Transformers II both on bluray. Each movie sounded amazing. The front speakers and rear speakers are loud and the unpowered sub woofer is great. Some will complain that the sub is unpowered, but really it does sound and feel excellent. it will satisfy most people. If your looking for a HD home theater system and already have a bluray player this is the system to get. It will save you money verses other bluray home theaters and its more versatile with its ports
Great System for Games and Movies

NOTE: This does *NOT* come with a built-in bluray player.

I got this system to hook up to my PS3. This is my first 5.1 system, so I can't really compare it against other systems, but I can say that I am very pleased with this product.

Sounds great, long speaker wires, 3 HDMI inputs, nice looking. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a 5.1 HTIB system in the $300 range.
Stunning quality for the price

I set the Sony S370 up with an Optoma projector & my PS3 in a 14' x10' room. The sound quality is shockingly good at this price point ($270 on sale). 3 HDMI in/1 out is awesome. Easy setup.

Seriously, it's time to quit shopping and pull the trigger.

I stewed over which unit to purchase for weeks. I wanted a good unit that gave me great sound and had some of the features that I was looking for. It also has to look good and it had to be in the right price range. This unit seemed to fit the bill. I was hesitant though because the last unit that I had was a JVC unit and it failed sooner then I thought it should. When this unit arrived I was impressed. It set up easy. Looked nice and it appeared to be just what I was looking for. When I put it to the test and played something though it I knew I had what I was looking for. It gave me the sound quality I wanted and it looked nice with the flat screen TV. One of the main things I wanted in a new unit was the HDMI pass through that this unit offers. I have to tell you it works great. I think things played from a unit hooked up to this unit utilizing the pass through look even better then they would have otherwise. I am very pleased with the unit and hope that it lasts for years to come.

This system was ok to hook up (we're a little technology shy) but once it was hooked up sounded great! I hooked up my iPod and played it and it worked great and sounded great. The speakers all have lots of wire (except the woofer) to go all around the room. We received this promptly and it was very well packaged.

I am a bit of an audiophile, so I am not easily impressed by many systems I have sen and demoed to date. I purchased this system to set up in my living room, and am pleased with it. The sound is pretty good, and the bass is decent. It has a lot of features for less than a more expensive system. I was able to get this on sale from 6 Ave Electronics for $167 (in store). I appreciate the FM tuner and the iPod dock!

I am using the unit as an HDMI upscaler, and it does a pretty good job of it. When an HD signal is being fed to it, the system automatically goes into bypass mode, which means that the HD signal carries surround sound in it, and it knows what needs to be done already, so it disregards your settings. This is a plus...

It is worth taking the few minutes to set up the speakers properly. You should enter the distances for each speaker as per the instructions, and also adjust the volumes on each one to your liking. I personally like more of a surround sound and less coming from the center speaker.

My only qualm about this unit to date is that it doesn't have any type of audio out, so that I can feed the signal to another amplifier and add speakers throughout the rest of the house.

Overall, I am pleased with it. Its not a DJ setup that will push mind blowing bass and highs, but it does a great job of putting out a clean, well rounded sound. Audiophiles may not be fully satisfied, but the average person will love it!
Home theater done cheap

Our aim from the start was to set up a HD TV and home theater on a tight budget. The main features we were looking for in the home theater was HDMI output, HD upscaling, and over 1000-watt surround sound. Oh, and then be as affordable as possible. This was all that.

It looks sharp. Not too fancy - the speakers mounted on the walls don't draw undue attention. It all looks nice - of course, I'm not an audiophile. It does all it is supposed to do, and at the price, I'm very happy with it!

What I've been disappointed with: First, the interface, setup menus and such. Very basic, difficult to use/navigate. Also, no auto-setup for the speakers. You'll have to sit, listen, adjust, and set it on your own. It didn't take me too long before I got it sounding good. And lastly, the remote isn't compatible with our universal remote, so we have to play the game of juggling remotes. Worst is when we are switching from DVD to Cable.

Oh, the only digital audio input it has is optical. I'd have rathered the orange RCA jack, but hey, it works. The iPOD docking station annoys me, becuase I don't buy Apple's hype. Still, props to them for getting proprietary support. It would be nice to have a USB hookup for any MP3 player.

After a long day at work, you just want to relax and have fun that you would normally put on TV is not something you want, too tired to go to the movies you choose to see one of your DVD collection.

So when the DVD is inserted into the slot, you can watch the film while the screen is ok, but the sound is terrible, you get tired, you just can not be bothered, so just put your head on the armrest of the car and fell aSleep.

Because the quality of the TV and a basic DVD player, you want your own home theater system has had!

If you have a large room, perhaps it would benefit the services of a specialist home theater that can advise you on your specific needs, such as control of power and the speaker and amplifierrequirements.

With all the choices you have to do to get my hands on a house to receive notice of a skilled designer could add the possibility of a theater more enjoyable and entertaining at home.

Review

If you do not Fussy quality and fun, which can be reached from your home, is my suggestion is to buy a lot simpler and less expensive system you can afford.

However,Who likes the idea of returning home after a long day and difficult turns on their home theater and get "real" movie will be a very well-designed home is set to appreciate.

For example, the set of speakers is not as easy as it sounds, surround sound is configured correctly, you forget the inside of your TV room, as though you are sitting in a theater in itself, but unfortunately a speaker system is not high qualitynot only frustrating for the ears, but you lose all the atmosphere as well.

You can avoid this type of "acute" and improve your enjoyment in creating a real home comfort in more furniture for the home theater and if you are the right choice of a professional home theater designer will help you not to enjoy the design .

Best purchase this year.

Reviewer: Jennifer Fidler,
I have been looking for a good solution for my sound system. I don't want to go all out just yet with a 1500 system, but I don't want a crappy Insignia system. This is without a doubt a better than expected solution. I use this for Satellite and watching movies on my computer and my iPod. It brought a whole new life to my living room.

1000 watts is more than enough juice for a medium size living room, the bass is flawless and very powerful, I eventually had to turn it down. I does very good Dolby 5.1. The center speaker is loud enough, I do not have a problem not hearing diaglogue with music or action is going on in a movie.

The remote is very handy and easy to use. Yeah yeah, it's one more remote for the house but the ease of switching the surround mode and device is simple.

I highly reccommend these speakers, you will not be disappointed.
iPhone 3G kinda works

Like the other reviewers I am impressed with the sound of this unit- though I wouldn't call myself a committed audiophile. I bought mine at a local "big box" store before I saw that Amazon had it on sale- either way great value- so I am giving it 5 stars. I bought this unit for listening to TV/music while in bed. I was pleasantly surprised- I am listening to Pandora music out of an iPhone 3G directly inserted into the iPod dock.

While it is in the dock some of the functions from the included remote work like skip to the next tune. I don't think the iPhone 3G can be charged in this cradle, but that is Apple's fault for changing their charging scheme. Apple makes their own 3G dock for like $40 which lets you charge and plug the music-out into "AUX 2" ... other than the iPod dock, but you lose some of the remote usefulness this unit only comes with 2 audio inputs.

TIP: I have a Motorola "universal" remote that came from Verizon called DRC800. The `philips' codes didn't work, manually I discovered that DVD/VCR code 0539 allows you to mute the unit or skip songs. Volume and power don't work so don't waste your time it's not really compatible with this unit, so plan on buying a real universal remote. I like the Logitech USB's `cause they get new codes from the web.

Good: Value Price, iPod dock, Sound, setup was easy

Bad: No earphone jack, only 2 RCA inputs, not fully compatible with iPhone 3G, only came with a single RCA cable, speaker wires are permanently attached and not RCA, no video in, cheap universals won't necessarily work.

I'm saying three bills because of the following:

You'll need speaker stands/mounts, HDMI/ optical/ coaxial cables, and possibly a converter box.

For the optimum experience the speakers need to be set up right or you end up missing some of the sound. The stands and mounts take care of that.

HDMI cables are pretty much a no brainer and because there is only one you will need either a coaxial cable or a converter like another reviewer stated. I think my set up is the same. HDMI to TV with optical audio out from cable box to converter which becomes coaxial digital in back to receiver. Having this information beforehand made the installation pretty straightforward and painless.

This Philips HTIB is powerful and although it is lacking a manual EQ it has a handful of preset sound modes that push out a nice spectrum of tunes. The one add on that is not permanent is my PS3. The inconvenience with the PS3 setup is it uses the same optical line as the cable box (optical to digital)to the receiver.

Yes the speaker wires are thin but I don't believe it would make a discernible difference if they were any thicker. By the way, these wires are thin enough to slip behind baseboards without making it too difficult. The lengths of the speaker wires may be questionable but for my set up in a 12 X 15 room the length of wire feels about right. I think the disk tray as others have mentioned is weird. When it is opened at the receiver it seems to take quite awhile. But when I open the tray via the remote it seems to open a lot quicker.

I have used the receiver for music and it does well to pick up stations. The remote whether using it for a disc or radio surfing, has been very easy to use.

In reading other reviews I was concerned with the rats nest of cables associated with a system like this and thus looked into sound bars. I'm glad that I stuck with this because the little amount of wire/cables running on the sidelines is a small sacrifice instead of having to give up 5.1 channels for something like 3.1 that cost more.

This system also has an amazing upconversion. Cars, Matrix reloaded, Nemo, 300 (as with many other systems a little grainy), Shrek(s), Happy Feet, all look incredibly detailed. This is definitely a theater system the whole family can enjoy.
Excellent product for the price

Do not expect it to give you a $1000 quality. But for the price it comes at, this product is just amazing. The installation was easy and sound quality is extremely nice. For less than $200, you certainly cannot ask for more. So, the bottomline is, if you do not want to spend $600 or $700 or more, then simply go for this. This will give you the same quality as a Sony or Panasonic which would cost you more than $300. And you get the additional advantange of a direct USB connection. Highly recommended.
Great System For The Price

After doing some online and local department store research I found this system has most of the features found on the more expensive models for about half the price.
I received my system within a week from ordering through Amazon and set it up in my bedroom which took only about an hour. The instructions were easy to follow, and there's plenty of speaker wire to easily seperate around a medium sized room.
Be sure to buy yourself a HDMI cable, there isn't one with this system.I suggest getting a brand name HDMI cable and not a cheap generic no-name brand. The picture quality with this system is excellent.
This system has plenty of power and you can adjust each speaker through the receiver to your personal preference.I was amazed with the sound quality with using both DVD's and CD's.The subwoffer really explodes the bass and you can feel it.
The remote is easy to use and I recommend reading the instruction manual especially when you want to adjust the speakers power and the built in equalizer for music type.
I gave this a 5 star rating, and I think it's the best purchase I've ever made with Amazon.
