Construction Soundproofing a Home Recording Studio

"How can I get my garage, basement, or in a soundproof room in my single family home or apartment, so my 4 piece rock band can practice and record and not disturb the neighbors?"

If I had a dollar for every time I was asked this question, I would be in the Bahamas now, instead of writing this article. Many factors must be before the beginning of your studio or practice room soundproofing project in question. Some of the questions you should ask is: whatstrengthening of the group will be used, the buckets, acoustic and miked or are digital. You'll live recording late at night, or we "in line" recording only? These questions and many others have to be before actual construction begins will be taken into account. As a live recording and plan of operation is therefore the maximum soundproofing will be required. The most effective way to soundproof a garage, basement or bedroom is really building a room in aRoom (go to http://www.auralex.com) and download the free booklet "Acoustics 101", this is a fantastic resource for the home studio builder.

Their ideas are solid and are under study for the project soundproofing. Bed in a room, using the concept of closed dead air space trapped between the inner walls and outer walls to help greatly with the soundproofing effort. This is probably the easiest for the walls to the frame plane, and then pour into place, soto clean the exterior facades of the walls much easier. It is strongly recommended that another limit joisted the room the room, but is often not possible because of space constraints.

In this case, the roof and beams exist, such as the cap for the study used if appropriately soundproofed with materials such as mass loaded vinyl or a combination of closed cell foam mat and MLV. I will develop thesematerials as you continue in this article. When the walls are framed and the right amount of "dead air space" is defined, then it's time to install sound insulation. The first order of business was to consider what should be done for cavity wall prior to installing a barrier and finally the plate. I want to line the internal cavities with a closed cell vinyl nitrile foam substrates such as American Mat. This mat (generally 1 / 4 "thick) have been inside the cavity, asand buds and beams with a contact cement to adhere to the carpet. Remember that the American Mat is used to adjust the cavity alone, not to fill the cavity. If the insulation is necessary, the use of products such as rock wool, mineral wool, cut wool fibers, or my favorite, Roxul. Roxul is a great warm-based rock wool insulation batt type, which is a great sound quality. If the insulation is a prerequisite for the rehearsal room or study, so Roxul is the way to go.

Now wearrives at a crossroads, it's time to determine if decoupling the walls using resilient channels or sound clips of the United States is a necessity. The link is used when the transmission of impact or a low-frequency noise is a factor. Effects will be mainly the drums (acoustic) and bass amplifier. But as the band using Marshall high powered amps (50 watt amp with 4 x 12 cabinets for example) with miked acoustic drums and an Ampeg bass system, then decoupling will probablynecessary. These methods and procedures will be explained in later articles. If decoupling were determined to be unnecessary as the next step could be a good barrier material found as American mass loaded vinyl (which is a highly mass loaded vinyl barrier). This obstacle can be stapled directly to the timber frame on a wall mount or directly to the beams. This is a method used, if factors of cost or space constraints. If the barrier material must be stapled directlydesign stud or joist so it is better if the shot came from over, caulked (using OSI acoustical caulking compound) and then with tape or a tape or a conductive PVC belt heavy seam.

When the mass loaded vinyl (MLV) is installed and sealed, it is time to install the last layer of plaster. I would recommend 5 / 8 "gypsum, as the final layer because of its mass and its features include audio .. E 'always advisable to butter the sides of the last layer of plaster withacoustic Caulker. You want to capture every STC (sound transmission class) is possible if you try to make your new studio as soundproof as possible. Finally, tape mud and paint the last layer of plaster. Now you have a great soundproof home recording studio. There acoustical treatments for your practice in the following sections discuss, but for now you're on the road to a professional recording studio quality at home.
